Fourth Grade News        January 26, 2007

January is flying! I can’t believe next week brings in February! Our fourth graders have been working hard. There have been some new materials introduced this week. Read below to find out!

Math: We have a Chapter 5 Math test on Tuesday, January 30. The students began working on review material this week. This test will be on time to hour, minute, and second. Also, please make sure your child is able to calculate elapsed time. Please review the test practice material with your child. I want them to do well!

Social Studies: The Chapter 4 Test will be on Friday, January 26. We have been reviewing for the test and the students seem to be doing well. They have many review sheets in their folders and they completed the chapter review from the book. We reviewed it as a class and had a huge discussion on each lesson. We will begin a journey across the world for our next unit in Social Studies. Please let me know if you do not have a way to access the internet at home or near your home. Students will be required to complete research out of school.

Reading: This week, students were introduced to their reading bags. Each bag contains comprehension strategies, thought-provoking comprehension questions, and a reading record. This is just another attempt at strengthening our comprehension. The bags are kept in our room with their DEAR books. Students can take them home at night. Students are now responsible for completing a book report after each book is complete. We are still waiting for our books to come in from Barnes and Noble. The students will be reading Because of Winn-Dixie. I will be collecting a few dollars from everyone once the books come. We will have a Spelling test tomorrow with our words from Marven of the Great North Woods.  The students have enjoyed rolling the comprehension cubes in their Literature Circles. This is a fun way for them to think aloud about our stories. The students discuss the answers as a group and offer their own opinions.

Have a great weekend!
